Movie Review Sherlock Holmes

Truth be told, this movie was my favorite movie of 2010. I've watched it three times now, so it's about time I did a review!

As a child, I was a bookworm. I'd go to the library every two weeks, library card hot in my jeans pocket, and borrow a dozen books, before breathlessly pouring through every single one at home. But somehow I never got around to anything written by Arthur Conan Doyle; fantasy was more my thing.

I was finally converted into the Sherlockian fandom when I went to watch the movie with a few friends. I was completely riveted as I watched, and fell head over heels in love with the odd and ominous world of Holmes. At the present, I've read two complete volumes of Watson's recollections, and plan to hunt out some of the others I've missed. Ah, how engaging all the stories are!

But back to the movie. I have to admit that the action was one of the main reasons why I loved it so. One of my favorite scenes was the one in the fighting ring, something Guy Ritchie, the famous action-packed scene-loving director, would not have done without. Its inclusion knocks the feet off the general modern public depiction of Holmes as a refined, cloaked pipe-smoking figure and shows them the Holmes we readers know: a strong, efficient, highly intelligent man trained in the ancient martial art of Baritsu.

Ah! There are so many things I love about it. The transformation scene is also one of my favorites: I had to watch it several times to catch everything. The witty interaction between Homes & Watson is also a pleasure to watch; you can really feel their bromance~ They have been through so much together, and act as though they are brothers. Guy Ritchie did an excellent job incorporating their almost intuitive kinship: they snidely rib on each other's faults, but back the other up at the shot of a gun. It's great~.

And now there's going to be a sequel! Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is set to be in theatres on December 16, 2011. It will deal with M... I wonder if they'll reveal M's identity to everyone? That will be shocking to those who don't know~ . I'm definitely going, maybe even to the premier! No trailer has been released yet, of course. I can't wait!
